The 586 DVD Player provides a two-channel analogue audio output, normally encoded in Dolby Surround, to allow direct connection to an analogue pre-amplifier such as the 502 Analogue Controller.

In addition to playing DVD discs, the 586 includes a second lens to enable it to play audio CDs (although not recordable CDs). By careful design Meridian have achieved a sound quality with audio CDs which approaches that of their dedicated CD players.

The 586 DVD Player is also ideal for use with the Meridian 541 Surround Controller to decode movie soundtracks to the loudspeakers in a multi-channel surround system.
