Surround sound

Your DVD player

will always deliver a high-quality 2-channel (stereo) signal to the audio output, regardless of whether the soundtracks on DVD movies are in 2-channel stereo, in Dolby Surround, in Dolby Digital (AC-3) or in MPEG2 audio multichannel. In some cases the soundtracks may be single channel (mono) only, then the output will also be mono only.

In order to benefit from the full digital 5-channel surround sound (Dolby Digital or MPEG2 audio) you need an external appropriate decoder, which has to be hooked up to the special optical or coaxial audio digital output (page 36/37).

Dolby Digital (AC-3) *

Dolby Digital are digital sound compression techniques developed by the Dolby Laboratories for digital multi-channel audio signals. The Dolby Digital system supports any configuration of audio channels, from stereo (2-channel) sound, up to 5.1 digital surround.

MPEG2 audio multichannel

The newly-developed MPEG2 audio multichannel technology is implemented for digital sound compression.

MPEG Multichannel The MPEG2 audio multichannel system supports any configuration of audio channels, from stereo (2-channel) sound, up to 7.1 digital channels including 5.1 surround sound.
