8. About system exclusive messages

Manufacturers are free to use system exclusive messages in any way they choose, and these messages are used mainly to trans- mit and receive parameters that are specific to particular de- vices, such as sound data and editing data.

The system exclusive message format of the ES-1is [F0, 42, 3n, 57, ... F7] (n: exclusive channel).

However, some system exclusive messages have been defined for use in a specific way, and these are called "universal system exclusive messages."

Of the various types of universal system exclusive messages, the ES-1supports the following two types.

·When an Inquiry Message Request [F0, 7E, nn, 06, 01, F7] message is received, the ES-1 will transmit an Inquiry Mes- sage [F0, 7E, nn, 06, 02, (9 bytes), F7] that means “I am a Korg ES-1, and my system version is ...”

·When a Master Volume [F0, 7F, nn, 04, vv, vv, 01, F7] is re- ceived, the volume of the entire system will be adjusted.

9. Transmitting sound settings

and other data (Data Dump)

Song, Pattern, and Global data can be transmitted as MIDI ex- clusive data, and stored on an external device. This data is trans- mitted and received on the MIDI channel selected in Global mode. Data dumps will be transmitted when a Data Dump Re- quest of the corresponding type is received.

10. Editing sounds etc.

By sending MIDI exclusive data dumps, you can rewrite all patterns or individual programs. By using NRPN messages in Pattern mode, you can edit the knobs that are active for each part.

Has the ES-1been set to receive MIDI data on the channel on which the data is being transmitted? (p.54)

Is the MIDI mode MIDI Channel parameter set to the desired channel? (p.54)

When playing an external device from the ES-1

Does the MIDI channel of the ES-1match the MIDI channel of the receiving device? (p.54)

Can't write a pattern or song!

Is the Global mode Protect setting turned "on"? (p.56)

Striking a part key does not play the specified
