Hot Water SupplySystems,ANSI Z21.22bya nationallyrecog- nizedtesting laboratorythat maintainsperiodicinspectionof productionof listedequipmentor materials.

The valvemust be niarked with a maximumset pressurenot to exceed the marked hydrostaticworking pressureof the water heater (150 IbsJsqin. .) and a dischargecapacitynot less than the water heaterinput rate as shownon the modelrating

Yourlocaljurisdictionalauthority,whilemandatingthe useof a temperature-pressurereliefvalvecomplyingwith ANSI 7-21.22and ASME, may require a valvemodel differentfrom the one furnishedwith the water heater.

Compliancewith suchlocalrequirements mustbe satisfiedby the installeror end user ofthe water heater with a locallypre-

scribedtemperature-pressurereliefvalveinstalledin the desig- nated openingin the water heater in placeof the factoryfor_ nishedvalve.

Forsafeoperationofthe water heater,the relief valvemustnot be removed from it'sdesignatedopeningor plugged.

The temperature-pressurereliefvalvemustbe installeddirectly intothe fittingof thewater heaterdesignatedfor the reliefvab/e.

:Positionthe valvedownwardand providetubingsothat anydis- chargewill exit onlywithin 6 inchesabove,or at any distance belowthe structuralfloor.Be certainthat no contactis made with anylive electricalpart. The dischargeopeningmust not be blockedor reduced in sizeunder any circumstancesExcessive. length,over 30 feet,or useof more than fourelbowscancause restriction andreducethe dischargecapacityofthevalve.

No valveor other obstructionisto be placedbetweenthe relief valveandthe tank. Do not connecttubingdirectlyto discharge drainunlessa 6" air gapisprovidedTo. preventbodilyinjury,haz- ard to life, or propertydamage,the relief valvemustbe alk)wed to dischargewater in quantitiesshouldcircumstancesdemand.If the dischargepipeis not connectedto a drainor other suitable means,thewater flowmaycausepmperty damage.

The DischargePipe:

Must not be smallerin size than the outlet pipesize of the

valve,or haveanyreducing couplingsor otherrestrictions.

Mustnot be pluggedor blocked.

Mustbe ofmateriallistedfor hot water distribution.

Must be installedso as to allow completedrainageof both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the discharge

p_pe.

Mustterminate at an adequatedrain.

Must not haveanyvalvebetweenthe retiefvalveand tank.

The temperature-pressure relief valve must be manually operated at least once a yea_ Caution should be taken to ensurethat (I) no one is in front of or aroundthe outlet of the temperature-pressuren.-qiefvalvedischargeline, and (2) the water manually dischargedwill not cause any bodily injury or property damage because the water may be exeremalyhot

If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely reset and continuesto release water, immediatelydose the cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining

instructions, and replace the temperature-pressure relief valvewith a newone.
