Troubleshooting Chart

Problem

 

Solution

 

 

 

The engine will not start.

1.

Follow the steps, “Start the Engine” in this book.

 

 

 

 

2.

Electric-Start Models: Clean the battery terminals. Tighten the

 

 

cables.

 

 

 

 

3.

Drain the fuel tank. Clean the fuel line. Replace the fuel filter.

 

 

 

 

4.

Remove the spark plug(s). Move the throttle to the SLOW position.

 

 

Turn the ignition key to the ON position. Try to start the engine

 

 

several times. Install the spark plug.

 

 

 

 

5.

Replace the spark plug.

 

 

 

 

6.

Adjust the carburetor.

 

 

 

The engine will not turn over.

Follow the steps, “Start the Engine” in this book.

 

 

 

 

2.

Electric-Start Models: Check the levle of the acid in the battery. If

 

 

needed, add water. Charge the battery.

 

 

 

 

3.

Replace the fuse.

 

 

 

 

4.

Check the wiring harness for damage or a loose connection. Repair

 

 

the damaged wire.

 

 

 

 

5.

Electric-Start Models: replace the solenoid. Recoil-Start Models:

 

 

replace the module.

 

 

 

The engine is difficult to start.

1.

Adjust the carburetor.

 

 

 

 

2.

Replace the spark plug.

 

 

 

 

3.

Replace the fuel filter.

 

 

 

The engine does not run smooth or has a
