SNMP

UNDERSTANDING SNMP

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is the de facto standard for managing commercial Transmission Control Proto- col/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) networks. It allows vendor equip- ment to be managed from a single control console.

The term SNMP broadly refers to the message protocols used to exchange information between the network and the managed de- vices, as well as to the structure of network management databas- es.

SNMP Components:

SNMP has three basic components: Network Manager, Agent, and MIB.

Network Manager

A control program that collects, controls, and presents data pertinent to the operation of the network devices.

Resides on a network management station.

Agent

A control program that responds to queries and commands from the network manager.

Returns requested information or invokes configuration changes initiated by the manager.

Resides in each network device connected.
