BIP CodingThe SONET specification calls for Bit Interleaved Parity (BIP) of error
monitoring. For the monitored section of signal, an error code is
define d so that a ll there is an even n umber of 1 s in the X b its, coun ting
the monitored section and the error code. This is illustrated in the
following figure.

To ensure that the signal is correc tly transferred, the error code byte
of one frame is stored in a byte of t he next frame. The receiver
compares the calculated parity wit h the byte stored in the next frame
to determine if the frame arrived cor rectly.
