Arbor
The shaft on which a blade or cutting tool is mounted.
Bevel Cut
Acuttingoperation made with the bladeat any angle
otherthan 90°to the mitertable.
Crosscut
Acuttingor shaping operation made across the grain
ofthe workpiece.
Compound Miter Cut
Acompound mitercut is acut made usingamiter
angleand abevel angleat the same time.
Freehand
Performinga cut without usinga fence, mitergage,
fixture, workclamp, or otherproper device to keep the
workpiecefrom twisting or movingduring the cut.
Gum
A sticky, sap based residue fromwood products.
Miter Cut
Acuttingoperation made with the blade at any angle
otherthan 90°tothe fence.
Resin
Asticky,sap base substancethat has hardened.
Revolutions Per Minute (RPM)
The number ofturns completed by a spinningobject
in one minute.
Saw Blade Path
The area over, under,behind, or in front of the blade.
Asit appliesto the workpiece, that area whichwillbe,
or has been, cut by the blade.
Set
The distance that the tipof the sawblade tooth is bent
(orset) outward from the face of the blade.
Throw-Back
Throwingof aworkpiecein a manner similar to a
kickback.Usually associated witha cause other than
thekerr closing, such as a workpiece not being
againstthe fence, being dropped intothe blade,or
being placed inadvertently in contact withthe blade,
Through Sawing
Anycutting operation wherethe blade extends
completelythrough the thicknessof the workpiece.
Workpiece
The item on which the cuttingoperation is being done.
The surfaces of a workpieceare commonlyreferred to
as faces, ends,and edges.
Zero Clearance Throat Plate
A plasticthroat plate insertedin the miter table that
allowsfor blade clearance. When you make your first
cutwith your compound miter saw, the saw blade cuts
a slotthrough the throat platethe exact widthof the
blade. Thisprovides fora zero clearance kerr that
minimizesworkpiece tear-out.
No Hands Zone
The area between the marked lines on the left and
right side of the miter table base. This zone is
identified by no hands zone labels placed inside the
marked lineson the miter table base.
