DSL-504G ADSL Router User’s Guide

NAT

Click on the NAT menu button to display the NAT and DMZ menu. This menu allows you to enable and disable Network Address Translation (NAT) system wide. Most users will leave the default NAT setting, Enabled. If NAT is Disabled, the DSL-504G will function essentially as a invisible bridge. Any LAN IP addresses will be readily visible to properly equipped agents on the WAN. If you are using multiple virtual circuits, NAT will be disabled for all PVCs. Special arrangements will be required if NAT is disabled and you want to support multiple IP addresses on your private LAN. You may be able to disable NAT if you are using DHCP Relay service from your ISP, but check with the ISP before doing this.

DMZ

Since some applications are not compatible with NAT, the Router supports use of a DMZ IP address for a single host on the LAN. This IP address is not protected by NAT and will therefore be visible to agents on the Internet with the right type of software. Keep in mind that any client PC in the DMZ will be exposed to various types of security risks. If you use the DMZ, take measures (such as client-based virus protection) to protect the remaining client PCs on your LAN from possible contamination through the DMZ.

Figure 4- 2. DMZ IP address configuration

To designate a DMZ IP address, type in the IP Address of the server or device on your LAN and click the Apply button. It will be necessary to save the settings and reboot the Router before the DMZ is activated. See Save Router Configuration Settings below.
