The NAC Controller can be configured in one of two modes of operation: Layer 2 or Layer 3. If the NAC Controller is positioned before the first routed boundary for connecting end‐systems, closer to the access edge of the network, the Layer 2 NAC Controller mode is utilized. In this mode of operation, the NAC Controller detects connecting end‐systems on the network by receiving traffic from a new MAC address. If the NAC Controller is positioned after the first routed boundary deeper inside the network, the Layer 3 NAC Controller mode is utilized. In this mode of operation, the NAC Controller detects connecting end‐systems on the network by receiving traffic from a new IP address. With the NAC Controller supporting both Layer 2 and Layer 3 modes of operation, the NAC Controller can be strategically positioned in the network topology to achieve the desired level of scalability and security.
