When I press the shutter button, a red light appears next to the viewfinder.

The camera is still saving the last photo you took.
The memory card has insufficient space for the picture. (The status LCD shows “000” photos remaining.)
Wait a few seconds for the camera to finish processing the photo, then press the shutter button 1/2 way down. When a steady green light appears next to the viewfinder, the camera is ready to take another photo.
Install a new memory card, make room on the current card by deleting or downloading photos, or select a lower photo quality setting.
