Hard Drive Installation and Replacement

Do not remove a second drive from an array until the first failed or missing drive has been replaced and the rebuild process is complete. (When the rebuild is complete, the Online LED on the front of the drive stops blinking.)

There are some exceptions:

In RAID ADG configurations, any two drives in the array can be replaced simultaneously.

In RAID 1+0 configurations, any drives that are not mirrored to other removed or failed drives can be simultaneously replaced offline without data loss.

Moving Drives and Arrays

You can move drives to other ID positions on the same array controller. You can also move a complete array from one controller to another (even if the controllers are on different servers).

Before moving drives, these conditions must be met:

The move will not result in more than 14 physical drives per channel.

No more than 32 logical volumes will be configured for a controller.

No drives are failed or missing.

The array is in its original configuration with no active spare drives.

Capacity expansion is not running.

Controller firmware is the latest version (recommended).

Some additional restrictions must be met when moving an array:

All drives in the array must be moved at the same time.

A drive array that is moved from a battery-backed array controller to one that is not battery-backed can no longer undergo array capacity expansion, logical drive capacity extension, or migration of RAID level or stripe size.
