DB2 UDB suspended I/O overview

DB2 UDB v7.2 has implemented suspended I/O technology, which provides the capability to use split mirroring technology while DB2 is online. Suspended I/O supports continuous system availability by providing a full implementation for splitting a mirror (pair) without shutting down the database. The split copy of the database can be used to do such things as:

Provide a transactionally consistent snapshot of the database at the current point in time. This database can be used to offload user queries that don’t need the most current version of the database.

Provide a standby database that can be accessed as a disaster recovery strategy if the primary database is not available. All logs from the primary database will be applied to the secondary database so that the secondary database represents a transactionally consistent version of the primary database at the time of the failure.

Provide the ability to offload backups from the primary database. A DB2 backup can be performed on the secondary database system. The DB2 backup can then be restored on either the primary system or on another system. Then the database can be rolled forward to bring the database to a particular point in time, or until the end of the logs are reached.

Provide the ability for a quick database restore. The mirror (pair) can be resynced so that the primary copy is restored to the initial data at the time of the split. Then the primary database can be rolled forward to bring the database to a particular point in time, or until the end of the logs are reached.
