Driver Emulations

Kyocera printer drivers support PCL and KPDL emulations. PCL, or Printer Command Language was developed by Hewlett Packard® (HP) to provide a simple and effective method for controlling a printer. In this language, the printer commands appear as embedded escape sequence codes in the print job data interpreted by the printer. Kyocera PCL drivers allow for font scaling, outline fonts, and vector graphic printing. PCL is not supported on Macintosh and UNIX based systems. Note: The factory default emulation for Kyocera printers is PCL. If the selected printer driver does not match the printer emulation, the printer emulation must be set for PCL, KPDL or KPDL (Auto) at the printer's front panel.

PCL 5c

Kyocera colour drivers utilize the PCL 5c colour printer language. This printer command language supports the commands necessary for colour printing, and supports PJL (Printer Job Language) commands, which allow for bi-directional communication between the printer and the computer. PCL 5c also provides complete backwards driver compatibility with earlier PCL versions, and offers a wide selection of fonts for use with Microsoft Windows applications.

PCL XL

Kyocera XL printer drivers utilize the PCL 6 printer language. PCL XL drivers offer improved graphics printing, reduced file sizes, better print speeds, and faster return to application than the PCL 5e driver. Drawbacks include no backwards compatibility and the fact that not all Kyocera printer models support XL printer drivers.

KPDL

Kyocera Page Description Language (KPDL) represents Kyocera's emulation of PostScript printing. Because the printer is set to a factory default of PCL, you must change the emulation from the printer's control panel or send the printer a command. PostScript print drivers have strong graphics reproduction performance and usually print slower than PCL drivers.
