Read this operator’s manual and safety rules before operating your lawn mower. Compare the illustration in Figure 8 with your lawn mower to familiarize yourself with the location of various controls and adjustments. Save this manual for future reference.

WARNING: The operation of any lawn mower can result in foreign objects being thrown into the eyes, which can damage your eyes severely. Always wear safety glasses while operating the mower, or while performing any adjustments or repairs.

Engine Controls

See the engine manual for the location and function of any controls located on the engine.

Blade Control Handle

The blade control handle is located on the upper handle of the mower as shown in Figure 8. The blade control handle must be depressed in order to start and operate the unit. Release the blade control handle to stop the engine and blade.

WARNING: The blade control handle is a safety device. Never attempt to bypass its operations.

Chute Deflector

The chute deflector is a device that is mounted on the machine as a safety device that directs the cut grass as it is discharged from the mower.

It is used when the grass is too high to mulch or when side discharging is preferred. The grass clippings produced when using the chute deflector will be noticeably larger than those produced when mulching.

Mulch Plug (If so Equipped)

The mower may be equipped with a mulching plug that cuts and recuts grass for finer clippings. Refer to next section for tips when cutting with mulch plug in place.

Throttle Control

Your engine is equipped with a constant speed throttle, which is set at full throttle for best performance.

Recoil Starter

The recoil starter handle is attached to the upper handle. Refer to Figure 8. Stand behind the unit in the operating position to start the unit.

Cutting Height Adjustment Lever

A height adjustment lever at each wheel provides cutting height adjustment. Each adjuster has nine height positions. Height of cut will be changed when the lever is moved from one position to another. Simply depress the lever towards the wheel and move the wheel and lever assembly to desired position. All four wheels must be placed in the same relative position.

NOTE: For rough or uneven lawns, move the height adjustment lever to a higher position. This will help prevent the scalping of grass.
