Active D-Lighting
Active D-Lighting preserves details in highlights and shadows for natural contrast. Use with high contrast scenes such as a brightly lit outdoor view framed in a door or window or a subjects in the shade on a sunny day. It is most effective when used with Matrix metering (0 124).

A“Active D-Lighting” Versus “D-Lighting”
The Active D-Lightingoption in the shooting menu adjusts exposure before shooting to optimize the dynamic range, while the D-Lightingoption in the playback menu (0 101) brightens shadows in images after shooting.
