Focus Lock

Focus lock can be used to change the composition after focusing, making it possible to focus on a subject that will not be in one of the ﬁve focus areas in the ﬁnal composition. It can also be used when the autofocus system is unable to focus ( 73).

When AF-Sis selected for Custom Setting 2 (Autofocus; 139), focus locks automatically when the in-focus indicator (●) appears in the viewﬁnder. When AF-Cis selected, focus must be locked manually using the AE-L/AF-Lbutton. To recompose a photograph using focus lock:

1 Position the subject in the selected focus area and press the shutter-release button halfway to initiate focus.

2 Check that the in-focus indicator (●) appears in the viewﬁnder.

AF-S (Single-servo AF)

Focus will lock automatically when the in- focus indicator appears, and remain locked until you remove your ﬁnger from the shutter- release button. Focus can also be locked by pressing the AE-L/AF-Lbutton (see below).

AF-C (Continuous-servo AF)

Press the AE-L/AF-Lbutton to lock both focus and exposure. Focus will remain locked while the AE-L/AF-Lbutton is pressed, even if you later remove your ﬁnger from the shutter-release button.
