Exposure Compensation

Controls used:button + main command dial

Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera, making pictures brighter or darker. It is most effective when used with center-weighted or spot metering (52).

Exposure compensation is available in modes P, S, and A (in mode M, only the exposure information shown in the electronic analog exposure display is affected; shutter speed and aperture do not change).

Press thebutton and rotate the main command dial until the desired value is displayed in the control panel. Exposure compensation can be set to values between – 5 EV (underexposure) and + 5 EV (overexposure) in increments of /EV. In general, choose positive values to make the subject brighter, negative values to make it darker.

At values other than ± 0, aicon will be displayed after you release thebutton. The current value for exposure compensation will be displayed in the viewfinder when thebutton is pressed.
