ASSEMBLY
Readand follow the assembly and adjustment
instructionsfor your snow thrower. All fasteners
arein the parts bag. Do not discard any parts or
materialuntil the unit is assembled.
WARNING:Before doing any as-
semblyor maintenance to the snow
thrower,remove the wire from the
sparkplug.
NOTE:In this instruction book, left and right
describethe location of a part from the oper-
ator’sposition behind the unit.
NOTE:Torque is measured in foot pounds
(metricN.m). This measurement describes
howtight a nut or bolt must be. The torque is
measuredwith a torque wrench.
NOTE:Fasteners and loose parts are shown
atfull size in Figure 31 on page 35.
NOTE:Illustrations are located on page 2
andon pages 29 through 34.

How ToRemove The Snow Thrower

FromThe Carton

1. (Figure3) The snow thrower is shown in the
shippingposition.
2. Cutand discard the plastic ties that secure
thecrank assembly and the speed control
rodassembly.
3. Cutdown all four corners of the carton and
laythe side panels flat.
4. Locateall parts that are packed separately
andremove from the carton.
5. Removeand discard the packing material
fromaround the snow thrower.
6. (Figure1) For shipping purposes, the height
adjustskids (7) are attached to the pallet.
Removethe screw (17) that secures each
heightadjust skid (7) to the pallet.
7. Holdonto the lower handle and pull the snow
throweroff the pallet.
CAUTION: DO NOT back over cables.
8. Removethe packing material from the han-
dleassembly.
9. Cutthe ties that secure the clutch control
cables(1) to the lower handle (2). Move the
cablesaway from the motor frame.

How ToAssemble The Handle And

Crank Assembly

1. (Figure4) Loosen, but do not remove, the
fasteners(1) in the upper holes of the lower
handle.
2. Removethe fasteners and the crank assem-
blyeyebolt (11) from the lower holes of the
lowerhandle.
3. (Figure1) Put the shift lever (6) into first
forwardposition.
4. (Figure4) Raise the upper handle (2) to the
operatingposition.
NOTE: Make sure the cables are not
caughtbetween the upper and lower han-
dle.
5. Installthe fasteners and the crank assembly
eyebolt(11) that were removed DO NOT
tightenuntil all fasteners are in place.
6. (Figure6) Attach the crank rod (15) to the
universaljoint assembly (16) with the hair
pin(12).
7. (Figure4) Tighten nut on eye bolt (11).
Makesure eye bolt (11) is properly aligned
andthe crank (18) can freely rotate.
8. Tightenall handle fasteners.

How ToInstall The Speed Control Rod

1. (Figure9) Attach the ball joint (6), located
onthe bottom end of the speed control rod
(2),to the shift yoke assembly (7). The fas-
teners(8) are attached to the ball joint (6)
atthe factory.
Thelength of the ball joint (6) and speed
controlrod (2) have been pre --adjustedat
thefactory. If an adjustment is required, loos-
enthe nut (9). Remove the fasteners (8) to
disconnectthe ball joint (6) from the shift
yokeassembly (7). To lengthen or shorten
thespeed control rod (2), turn the adapter
(10)to obtain the correct length.
2. Attachthe handle (11) onto the speed se-
lectlever (5). On some models the handle
(11)is attached. To lock in position, tighten
thehex jam nut (10) against the bottom of
thehandle (11).
3. Makesure the speed select lever (5) func-
tionscorrectly. Move the speed select lever
(5)through all speeds.

How ToInstall The Knobs

NOTE:If knobs are already installed, go to
thenext selection.

RemoteChute Knob

1. Assembleremote chute knob (1) onto lever
(3)until snug against nut (2). On some mod-
elsthe remote chute knob (1) is attached.
2. Makesure lip (4) on the remote chute knob
(1)is pointed toward the engine.
3. Tightenthe nut (2) against the bottom of the
remotechute knob (1).

How ToAssemble The Chute Deflector

1. (Figure7) Remove carriage bolt (1).
2. Raisethe chute deflector (2) into operating
position(3).
3. Fastenchute deflector (2) to flange (4) with
carriagebolts (1). Make sure to install with
headof the carriage bolts (1) on the inside
ofthe flange (2).
4. Fastenwith washers (5) and locknuts (6).
5. Tightenlocknuts (6) securely.
NOTE: Make sure all carriage bolts in flange
aretight. DO NOT OVERTIGHTEN.

CheckThe Cables

1. (Figure8) Check the traction drive cable
(1)and the auger drive cable (2). If the bot-
tomof the cables have become discon-
nected,reinstall the cables.
2. (Figure11) If the top of the cables (5) have
becomedisconnected from the drive levers
(6),attach the cables (5) to the “Z” fitting
(7).

How ToSet The Skid Height (Figure 1)

Thesnow thrower is equipped with height ad-
justableskids (7) mounted on the outside of the
augerhousing (4). To adjust the height of the
skids, see “How To Adjust The Height Of The
Skids”in the Maintenance section.

How ToSet The Length Of The Cables

Thecables were adjusted at the factory and no
adjustmentsshould be necessary. However, af-
terthe handles are put in the operating position,
thecables can be too tight or too loose. If an
adjustmentis necessary, see “How To Check
AndAdjust The Cables” in the Service And Ad-
justmentsection.

How ToAssemble The Drift Cutter

(if equipped)

Driftcutters are used to cut a path through snow
deeperthan the auger housing.
1. Loosen the wingnuts (2) that secure the
driftcutters (1) to the auger housing.
2. Raisethe drift cutters (1) to the desired
height.
3. Tightenthe wingnuts (2).

How ToPrepare The Engine

NOTE:The engine was shipped from the
factoryfilled with oil. Check the level of the
oil.Add oil as needed.

Checkthe oil. See the engine manufacturer ’s
instructionsfor the type of fuel and oil to use.
Beforeyou use the unit, read the information on
safety,operation, maintenance, and storage.

Important!Before You Start Operating

UCheckthe fasteners. Make sure all fas-
tenersare tight.
UOnelectric start models, the unit was
shippedwith the starter cord plugged
intothe engine. Before operating, un-
plugthe starter cord from the engine.
UIfa bar code label is attached to the han-
