yourselfwith the location of various controls and
adjustments.
How ToControlTheDischarge Of The Snow
WARNING:Never direct the dis-
chargeof snow toward bystanders.
WARNING:Always stop the engine
beforeunclogging the discharge
chuteor the auger housing and be-
foreleaving the snow thrower.
1. (Figure1) Tu rn the crank assembly (2) to
changethe discharge direction of the snow.
2. Pullthe remote chute lever (20) back to
dischargethe snow high and far. Push the
remotechute lever (20) forwardtodis-
chargethe snow down.
How ToStopTheSnow Thrower (Figure1)
1. To stop discharging snow, release the auger
drivelever (5).
2. To stop the wheels, release the traction
drivelever (1).
3. Stoptheengine.
a. To stop the engine on models with a
throttlecontrol (13), first move the
throttlecontrol (13) to the SLOW posi-
tionand then move it to the STOP posi-
tion.
b. To stop the engine on models with an
ignitionswitch (13), move the ignition
switch(13) to the OFF position.
c. Pullout and remove the safety key (8).
CAUTION:To stop the engine, do not move
thechoke control to CHOKE position. Back-
fireor engine damage can occur.
How ToGo Forward or Backward(Figure1)
1. To change the ground speed, first release the
tractiondrive lever (1) and then move the
speedshift lever (6) to the desired speed.
2. Groundspeedis determined by snow condi-
tions.Select the speed by moving the speed
shiftlever (6) into the appropriate notch on
theshift lever plate.
Speed1, 2 Wet,Heavy
Speed3 Light
Speed4 VeryLight
Speed5, 6 Transportonly
3. To go forward, engage the traction drive
lever(1). Maintain a firm hold on the handle
asthe snow thrower starts to move forward.
Guidethe snow thrower by moving the han-
dleeither left or right. Donot attempt to push
thesnow thrower.
4. To go backward, release the tractor drive
lever(1).
5. Movethespeed shift lever (6) into either
firstor second reverse.
6. Engagethetraction drive lever (1).
IMPORTANT: Do not move the speed shift
lever(6) while the traction drive lever (1) is
engaged.
How ToThrow Snow (Figure1)
1. Engagetheauger drive lever (5).
2. To stop throwing snow, release the auger
drivelever (5).
WARNING:The operation of any
snowthrower can result in foreign
objectsbeing thrown into the eyes,
whichcan result in severe eye damage.
Alwayswear safety glasses or eye shields
whileoperating the snow thrower. We rec-
ommendstandard safety glasses or use a
widevision safety mask over your glasses.
BeforeStarting The Engine
1. Beforeyouservice or start the engine, famil-
iarizeyourself with the snow thrower. Be
sureyou understand the function and loca-
tionof all controls.
2. Checkthetension of the clutch cable before
startingthe engine. See “How To Adjust The
ClutchCable” in the Maintenance section of
thismanual.
3. Makesurethat all fasteners are tight.
4. Makesurethe height adjust skids are proper-
lyadjusted. See“How To Adjust The Height
OfThe Skids” in the Maintenance section of
thismanual.
5. Checktheair pressure in the tires. The cor-
rectair pressure is 14 PSI (1 BAR) to 17 PSI
(1.25BAR). Do not exceed the maximum
amountof air pressure shown on the side of
thetire.
How ToStop The Engine (Figure 1)
1. To stop the engine on models with a throttle
control(13), first move the throttle control
(13)to the SLOW position and then move it
tothe STOP position.
2. To stop the engine on models with an igni-
tionswitch (13), move the ignition switch
(13)to the OFF position.
3. Pulloutand remove the safety key (8).
CAUTION:To stop the engine, do not move
thechoke control to CHOKE position. Back-
fireor engine damage can occur.
How ToStart The Engine (Figure 1)
Modelsequipped with an Electric Starter
NOTE:An electric starter kit can be added to
recoilstart engines. Electricstarter kits are
availablefrom your nearest authorized ser-
vicecenter.
WARNING:The starter is equipped
witha three --wirepower cord and
plugand is designed to operate on
220volt A.C. household current. The power
cordmust be properly grounded at all times
toavoid the possibility of electrical shock
whichcan injure the operator. Carefullyfol-
lowall instructions in the “How To Start The
Engine”section. Makesure that your house
wiringis a three --wiregrounded system. If
youare not sure, ask a licensed electrician.
Ifyour house wire system is not a
three--wiregrounded system, do not use
thiselectric starter under any conditions. If
yoursystem is grounded but a three --hole
groundedreceptacle is not available to start
theengine, have a three --holegrounded re-
ceptacleinstalled by a licensed electrician.
Toconnect a 220 volt A.C. power cord, al-
waysconnect the power cord to the switch
box(11) on the engine first. Then, plug the
otherend into the three --holegrounded re-
ceptacle. When disconnecting the power
cord, always unplug the end from the
three--holegrounded receptacle first.
HowTo Start A Cold Engine (Figure 1)
1. Checktheengine oil.
2. Fillthefuel tank with regular unleaded petrol.
See“How To Prepare The Engine”.
3. Makesurethe traction drive lever (1)and
theauger drive lever (5) are in the disen-
gaged(released) position.
4. To start the engine on models with a throttle
control(13), move the throttle control (13)
tothe FAST position. Operate the engine
withthe throttle control (13) in the FAST
position.
5. To start the engine on models with an igni-
tionswitch (13), move the ignition switch
(13)to the ON position.
6. Insertthesafety key (8) into the ignition slot.
Makesure the safety key (8) snaps into
place.Do not turn the safety key (8). Re-
movethe extra safety key and keep in a safe
place.
7. Movethechoke control (14) to the full
chokeposition.
8. (ElectricStart) Connect the power cord to
theswitch box (11) located on the engine.
9. (ElectricStart) Plug the other end of the
powercord into a three --hole,grounded 220
VOLT,A.C. receptacle. (See the WARNING
inthis section).
10.Push the primer button (9). Every time you
pushthe primer button (9),waittwosec-
onds. For the number of times required to
pushthe primer button (9), see the engine
manufacturer’sinstructions.
11. (Electric Start) Push on the electric start
button(10) until the engine starts. Do not
crankfor more than 5 seconds at a time.
Waitone minute between starts to allow the
starterto cool.
12.(Recoil Start) Slowly pull the recoil starter
handle(12) until resistance is felt and then
pullrapidly to start the engine. Do not allow
therecoil starter handle (12) to snap back.
Slowlyreturn the recoil starter handle (12).
13.If the engine does not start in 5 or 6 tries,
Seethe “Trouble Shooting Chart” Instruc-
tions.
