Blændeindstillingen, lukkerhastighed og ISO-følsomheden hænger snævert sammen, når der tages et billede. Blændeindstillingen kontrollerer den åbning, der regulerer lysmængden, der kommer ind i kameraet, mens lukkerhastighed bestemmer hvor lang tid, lyset får lov til at komme ind. ISO-følsomheden bestemmer den hastighed, hvormed filmen reagerer på lys. Sammen beskrives disse tre aspekter som eksponeringens tre faktorer.

Lukkerhastigheden er f.eks. nyttig til at udtrykke bevægelse, blænderen kan kontrollere dybdeskarpheden, og ISO-følsomheden kan kontrollere et billedes kornethed.
