Technical Notes

Formula for determining the minimum subject illumination for different F value

The amount of light passed through a lens is expressed by a value called “aperture value” (F value or F number). When the aperture is fully open (maximum aperture), the maximum amount of light is passed through the lens. This is the lens’ brightness and is expressed by the “maximum aperture F value”. The maximum aperture F value is obtained by dividing the focal length with the lens diameter (D). The capital letter “F” is used to distinguish it from “f”, which means the focal length.

f

SANYO defines the minimum

subject illumination to be the

level that produces the signal

F= D

level of 50 IRE in measuring

camera performance.

For the comparison of the minimum subject illumination:

Always confirm the F value and the IRE level used in the measurement. If the F value and the IRE level do not match, then convert the values in camera specifications

Example System

Standard minimum subject illumination x (

Example:

For a lens of F1.2, use the value of 1.0 lx which is obtained by actual measurement.

1.0 x 1.2 = 1.4 lx

When using a lens of F1.6:

( 1.6 )2

1.0 x 1.2 = 1.8 lx
