Using the Radio Data System (RDS)
Descriptions of the PTY (Programme Type) codes, TP (Traffic Programme) and TA
(Traffic Announcement).
You can search for and receiv e the following PT Y, TP and TA signals.
Note:
When you select a programme in the EON stand-by mode, the unit will display "TI" instead
of "TA".
News Short accounts of facts, events and publicly ex pressed vie ws, reportage
and actuality.
Affairs Topical programme expanding or enlarging upon the news, generally in
different presentation style or concept, including debate, or analysis.
Info Programmes whose purpose is to impart advice in the widest sense.
Sport Programme concerned with any aspect of sport.
Educate Programme intended primari l y to educate, of which the formal element is
fundamental.
Drama All radio plays and serials.
Culture Programmes c on cerne d with any aspect o f n ati onal o r regi onal cul tu re, i n-
cluding language, theatre, etc .
Science Programmes about the natural sciences and technology.
Varied Used for mainly speech-based programmes usually of light-entertainment
nature, n ot covered by other categories. Examples include: quizzes, panel
games, personalit y interviews.
Pop M Commercial music, which woul d generally be considered to be of current
popular appeal, often featuring in current or recent record sales charts.
Rock M Contemporar y modern music, usually written an d performe d by youn g mu-
sicians.
Easy M Current contemporary music cons idered to be "easy -listening", as op-
posed to Pop, Rock or Classical, or one of the specialised mu sic styles,
Jazz, Folk or Count ry. Music in this category is often but not always, vocal,
and usually of short duration.
Light M Classical music for g eneral, rather th an speci alist appr eciation. E xamples
of music in this ca tegory are instrumental music, an d vo cal or choral
works.
Classics Performances of major or chestral work s, symphonies, c hamber music,
etc., and inc l uding Grand Opera.
Other M Musical st yles not f itting int o any of the other categorie s. Part icularly us ed
for specialist music of which Rhyth m & Blues and Reggae are examples.
Weather Weat her reports and forecasts and meteorolo gical information.
Finance Stock Market reports, commerce, tradi ng, etc.
Children For prog rammes targeted at a young audience, primarily for entertainment
and interest, rathe r than where the objec tive is to educat e.
Social Programmes about pe ople and things that inf luence them individua lly or in
groups. Inc l udes: sociology, history, geog raphy, psychology and society.
Religion Any aspect of beliefs and faiths , involving a God or Gods, the nature of ex-
istence and ethics.
Phon e in Involving members of the public expressing their views either by phone or
at a public forum.
Travel Features and programmes concerned with travel to near and far destina-
tions, package t ours and trav el ideas and op portuniti es. Not fo r use f or an-
nouncements about pr oblems, delays, or roadworks aff ecting immediate
travel where TP/TA should be us ed.
Leisure Programmes concerned with recreational activities in which the lis tener
might participate. Exam ples include, Garde ning, Fishing, An tique collect-
ing, Cookin g, Food & Wine, etc.
Jazz Polyphonic, syncopated music characterised by improvisation.
Country Songs which orig inat e from, or conti nue t he musical t radi tio n of the Ame r-
ican Southern States. Chara cterise d by a straight forward melody and nar-
rative story line.
Nation M Current Popu lar Music of th e Nation or Regio n in that coun try's lan guage,
as opposed to International 'Pop' which is usually US or UK inspired and
in English.
Oldies Music from the so-cal led "golden ag e" of popular musi c.
Folk M Music which h as it s root s in the mu si cal cult ure o f a part icula r na tion, usu-
ally played on acoustic ins truments. T he narrative o r s tory may be bas ed
on historical events or people.
Document Programme c oncer ned with f actual ma tt er s, pres ented in an i nvestig at ive
style.
TEST Broadcast when testing emergency broadcas t equipment or receivers.
Alarm ! Emergency announcement made under exceptional circumstances to give
warning of events causing danger of a general nature.
None No programme type (receive only).
TP Broadcasts which carry traffic announcements.
TA Traffi c announcements are being bro adcast.
