6.Stop the engine, disconnectthe spark
plugwire andpreventit fromtouching the
sparkplug, wheneveryou leavetheoperat-
ing position, before unclogging thetines,
or whenmaking any repairs,adjustments
or inspections.
7.Takeall possible precautions when leav-
ingthe machine unattended. Stopthe en-
gine.Disconnect the spark plug wire and
moveit away from thespark plug. Besure
that both wheelsare in the WheelDrive po-
sition.
8. Before cleaning, repairing, or inspect-
ing,stop the engineand make certain all
moving parts havestopped. Disconnect
thespark plugwire and preventit from
touching the spark plug to preventacci-
dentalstarting.
9.The flap on the fine hood must bedown
whenoperating the tiller.
10. Neveruse the tiller unlessproper
guards,plates, or othersafety protective
devicesare in place.
11. Donot run theengine in anenclosed
area.Engineexhaust contains carbon
monoxidegas, a deadly poison that is
odorless,colorless, and tasteless.
12. Keepchildren andpets away.
13.Never operate thetiller underengine
powerif thewheels arein the Freewheel
position.In the Freewheelposition, the
wheelswill not hold the tiller backandthe
revolvingtines could propel the tiller rapid-
ly,possibly causingloss of control. Always
engagethewheels with the wheel drive
pinsin theWheel Drive position before
startingthe engineor engaging the
tines4Nheelswiththe Forward Clutch Bail
(all models) or the ReverseClutchcontrol
(Models 634A only).
14. Beaware thatthe tillermay unex-
pectedlybounceupwardorjumpforward
if thetines shouldstrike extremelyhard
packedsoil, frozenground,or buried ob-
stacleslike large stones,roots, or
stumps.
If indoubtaboutthe tilling conditions, al-
waysusethe following operating precau-
tionstoassistyou in maintainingcontrol
ofthe tiller:
a. Walk behindand to one side of the
tiller,usingone handon the handle
barsRelax yourarm, but usea
securehandgrip.
b. Useshallower depthregulator
settings,working graduallydeeper
with eachpass.
ยข. Useslower enginespeeds.
d. Clear thetilling area of all large
stones,rootsor other debris.
e. Avoidusingdownwardpressureon
thehandlebars. If needbe, use
slightupwardpressureto keep the
tinesfrom diggingtoodeeply.
f. Beforecontacting hardpackedsoil
atthe end of a row, reduce engine
speedand lift thehandlebarsto
raisethe tines out of the soil.
g. In an emergency,stopthetines and
wheels byreleasing whichever
clutch controlis engaged.Do not
attemptto restrainthe tiller.
15. Donot overload the tiller's capacityby
attemptingto till too deeplyat too fast a
rate.
16. Neveroperate the tiller at high trans-
portspeeds on hard or slippery surfaces.
Lookbehind and use care when backing
up.
17. Donot operate thetiller ona slopethat
is too steep for safety. When on slopes,
slow down and make sure you have good
footing. Neverpermit thetille rto freewheel
downslopes.
18. Neverallow bystandersnear the unit.
19. Onlyuse attachmentsand accessories
that are approved by the manufacturer of
thetiller.
20. Usetiller attachments and accessories
whenrecommended.
21. Neveroperatethe tiller without good
visibility or light.
22. Neveroperatethe tiller if you aretired;
or underthe influence of alcohol, drugs or
medication.
23.Operators shall nottamper with the en-
gine-governorsettings on the machine;
the governor controls the maximum safe
operatingspeed to protect the engine and
all movingparts from damagecaused by
overspeed.Authorizedservice shall be
sought if a problem exists.
24. Do not touch engine parts which may
behotfrom operation. Let parts cool down
sufficiently.
25.Please remember:Youcanalways stop
thetines and wheels by releasingthe For-
wardClutch Bail or on Model 634Athe Re-
verseClutchcontrol, (whichever control is
engaged),orby moving the ignition switch
and/orthrottle control lever on the engine
to"OFF" or "STOP".
26. Toload or unload the tiller, seethe in-
structions in Section4 of this Manual.
27. Useextremecaution when reversing
or pulling the machine towards you.
28. Startthe engine carefully accordingto
instructions and with feet well away from
thetines.
29. Neverpick up or carry a machinewhile
theengine is running.
Maintenanceand Storage
1. Keepthe tiller, attachments and acces-
soriesin safe working condition.
2. Checkall nuts, bolts, and screws for
propertightness to besurethe equipment
is in safeworking condition.
3. Neverstore the tiller with fuel in the fuel
tankinsidea building where ignition sourc-
esarepresent suchas hot water andspace
heaters,furnaces, clothes dryers, stoves,
electricmotors, etc.).Allow the engineto
coolbefore storing the unit in anyenclo-
sure.
4. To reducethe chances of a fire hazard,
keeptheengine freeof grass, leaves, or ex-
cessivegrease.
5. Storegasoline in acool, well-ventilated
area,safely awayfrom anyspark- or
flame-producingequipment. Store gaso-
linein an approved container, safelyaway
from the reachof children.
6. Referto the Maintenancesections of
this Manualand the separate EngineOwn-
er'sManual for instructions ifthe unit is to
bestored for an extendedperiod.
7. Neverperform maintenancewhile the
engineis running orthe spark plug wire is
connected,exceptwhen specifically in-
structedto do so.
8. Ifthe fuel tank hasto be drained, dothis
outdoors.
