Chapter 1. Introducing the xSeries 255 Type 8685 server

The IBM® Eserver xSeries255 Type 8685 server, which features IBM X-Architecturetechnology, is a high-performance server that can be upgraded to a symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) server through a microprocessor upgrade. It is ideally suited for networking environments that require superior microprocessor performance, efficient memory management, flexibility, and large amounts of reliable data storage.

Performance, reliability, and expansion capabilities were key considerations in the design of your server. These design features make it possible for you to customize the system hardware to meet your needs today, while providing flexible expansion capabilities for the future.

If you have access to the World Wide Web, you can obtain up-to-date information about your server model and other IBM server products at http://www.ibm.com/eserver/xseries/ on the World Wide Web.

The machine type and serial number are located on the identification label on the front of the server. You will need these numbers when you register your server with IBM.
