There are several different indicators in the My Kitchen Control Panel. The different indicators are displayed in Figure 18, and described in the para- graphs below.

Appliance Online

When one of your networked appliances is functioning properly and com- municating with the iCEBOX, a green circle will display in the My Kitchen Mode Control Window below the image of the appliance, and next to the appliance name. In Figure 18, the Microwave Oven is shown with the green circle.

In this case, the Microwave Oven is also selected, and therefore each sta- tus message from the microwave is displayed in the My Kitchen Control Screen. Additionally, an appliance that displays the green circle will receive a nightly update from the Beyond Recipe Database, via the iCEBOX’s internet connection.

Appliance Offline

When one of your networked appliances stops communicating with the iCEBOX, for example because it is unplugged or moved out of range, then the green circle will change to a red triangle. The Bread Maker pictured in Figure 18 is in the Offline state.

While an appliance is offline, status messages will not display, and as long as the appliance remains offline, nightly internet updates will discontinue.

Appliance Not Present

If you don’t have an appliance, or if you have it but it isn’t networked, the appliance will display as a ghosted image in the My Kitchen Mode Con- trol Window. The Coffee Maker in Figure 18 is ghosted, indicating that there is no Coffee Maker in the appliance network.

The Beyond Appliances like the Microwave and Bread Maker are smart appliances, in that they already know the right cooking times for thou- sands of packaged foods and bread mixes. To cook known foods and mixes, instead of entering cooking times and power settings by hand, all you do is scan the UPC Code (bar code) on the product package, and the smart appliance will cook the product perfectly. It is brilliantly convenient.

Occasionally, however, you will scan items that are not in the Microwave or Bread Maker memory. In this case, the appliance will display the “Not In Memory” message, and then you will cook the product according to the package instructions, just like you would with a normal appliance.
