Local network

The network where you are making a call. This may be your home

 

network or another GSM network.

PIN

Personal Identification Number - An optional code used for all

 

GSM-based phones to establish a personal authentication access to

 

the phone menu. The PIN code is commonly given with your

 

subscription and is the secret code of the SIM card.

PIN2

Another authorisation code which is used only for special services.

Public Names

Function that allows you to restrict dialling to selected numbers.

PUK

Personnal Unblocking Code - Used to unlock a blocked SIM card by

 

entering a wrong PIN code 3 times. This is not commonly delivered

 

with your subscription and several operators may apply a severe cost

 

on this type of service.

PUK2

Used to unlock a blocked SIM card by entering a wrong PIN2 code 3

 

times.

OBEX

OBject EXchange protocol - Communication protocol allowing

 

external devices such as PDAs and mobile phones to exchange name

 

or event records. When installed on a printer, allows to print a

 

record send directly from the mobile to the printer via Bluetooth.

Roaming

Traveling outside a wireless carrier's or subscriber's local or home

 

coverage area. There is usually an additional charge for roaming.

URL

Uniform Resource Locator - URLs are the Internet equivalent of

 

addresses. Like other types of addresses, they move from the general

 

to the specific (from zip code to recipient, so to speak), e.g.,

http:/ (protocol)

 

/www.pcc.philips.com (server address or domain)

 

/mobilephones/ (directory in which the file index.html resides).

WAP

Wireless Application Protocol - Organised and regulated by the

 

WAP forum, WAP gives the opportunity to GSM network operator

 

to run specific applications on a wireless network in using the

 

Internet technology adapted to wireless phones.
