It is during recording that the greatest demands are made on a mixer in terms of transparency and audio quality. While a stereo recording will often be made di- rect to the master tape machine, multitrack machines provide greater flexibility by allowing the recording to be done in three stages. The first stage is Tracking in which individual voices or instruments, or groups of in- struments are recorded as cleanly as possible on selected tracks on the multitrack machine. The second
