Before you can connect to the Internet, you need to:

1Set up an account with an ISP. You can find an ISP in your telephone directory. Look under ÒInternet access,ÓÒInternet service,Ó or Òonline.Ó

2Gather the connection information you need from your ISP or network administrator. See the next section, ÒGathering the Information You NeedÓ on page 89 to find out what information you need for each type of connection. You can write the information directly on the next few pages for reference, and then enter it in Setup Assistant.

If another computer in the same location is already connected to the Internet, you may be able to use its settings.

To find the settings on a Mac OS X computer:

åOpen the Network pane of System Preferences.

åChoose your connection method from the Show pop-up menu.

åCopy the information for your configuration.

To find the settings on a Windows PC:

The connection information on a Windows computer resides in two places.

åTo find the IP address and subnet mask, open the ÒNetwork and Internet ConnectionsÓ control panel.

åTo find user account information, open the User Accounts control panel.

3If you are using an external modem, plug the modem into a USB (d) port on your computer, and plug a phone cord into the port on the modem and into a telephone wall jack. If you are using a DSL or cable modem, follow the instructions that came with the modem to connect it to your computer.
