14OutLook ES Series Installer/User Guide

To install a 16-port switch:

1.Prepare the location for the switch. See Rack Mounting your OutLook ES Unit in this chapter if you are rack mounting the unit.

2.Select cables with appropriate connectors and length. (See Appendix B for specifications.) All 16-port switches require one high density 50-pin for every two computer cable sets of keyboard, video and mouse connectors.

3.Connect the high-density cable to the appropriate port on the back of the switch. You will note that each 50-pin connector is labeled with two numbers and symbols. The symbols help you determine the switch port number of the two keyboard, video and mouse cable sets.

NOTE: Cable length affects video quality as well as keyboard and mouse data timing. The maximum cable length is determined in part by the computer and peripherals used. Not all systems will give satisfactory results at the maximum length.

4.Select the two computers to be connected to the first port. Connect each computer’s monitor to the 15-pin VGA connector. Connect each computer’s keyboard and mouse to the appropriate connector. Bundle and label the cables for easy identification.

5.Repeat steps 3 and 4 for all remaining computers to be connected to the switch unit.

6.Connect the power cord to the switch unit.
