Oil Recommendations

Werecommend the use of Briggs & Stratton Warranty Certified oils for best
performance.Other high-quality detergent oils are acceptable if classified for serviceSF,
SG, SH, SJ orhigher. Do not use special additives.
Outdoortemperatures determinethe proper oil v iscosity for the engine. Use the chart to
select the best viscosity for the outdoor temperature range expected.

SAE 30

10W-30

Synthetic 5W-30

5W-30

°F°C
*Below40°F(4°C)the use of SAE 30 will result in hard starting.
** Above80°F(27°C)the use of 10W-30may cause increased oil consumption. Check
oillevel more frequently.

How ToCheck /Add Oil - Figure 2

Beforeadding or checkingthe oil
Placeengine level.
Cleanthe oil fill area of any debris.
1. Removethe dipstick (A) and wipe with a clean cloth (Figure 2).
2. Fullyinsert the dipstick.
3. Removethe dipstick and check the oil level. It should be at the top of the full indicator
(B)on the dipstick.
4. Iflow, add oil slowly into the engine oil fill (C). Do not overfill. After adding oil, wait
oneminute and then recheck the oil level.
5. Fullyinsert the dipstick.

Low Oil Protection System (if equipped)

Someengines areequipped with a low oil s ensor. If the oil is low, the sensor will either
activatea warning light or stop the engine. Stop the engine and follow these steps before
restartingthe engine.
Makesure the engine is level.
Check the oil level. See the How ToCheck/ Add Oil section.
If theoil level is low, add the proper amount of oil. Start the engine and make sure
thewarning light (if equipped) is not activated.
If theoil level is not low, do not start the engine. Contact an Authorized Briggs &
StrattonDealer to have the the oil problem corrected.

Fuel Recommendations

WARNING
Missing or inoperative “fuel lock-off” valve can cause a fire or
explosion.
Donot operate the equipment if the “fuel lock -off”valve is missingor inoperative.
Fuel must meet these requirements:
Useclean, dry f uel, free of moistureor any particulate material. Using fuels outside
thef ollowing recommended values may cause performance problems.
Inengines set up to run on LPG, commercial grade HD5 LPG is recommended.
Recommendedfuel composition is fuel with a minimumfuel energy of 2500 BTU’s/ft3
withmaximum propylene content of 5% and butane andheavier gas content of 2.5%
andminimum propane content of 90%.
NGor LPG engines arec ertified to operate on natural or liquid propane gas. The
emissionscontrol system for this engine is EM (Engine Modifications).
WARNING: Theequipment on which this engine is mounted is equipped
withan automatic safety gas “fuel lock-off” valve. Do not operate the equipment if the
“fuellock -off”valve is missing or inoperative.

How ToAdd Fuel

WARNING
Fuel andits vapors are extremely flammable and explosive.
Fireor explosioncan cause severe burns or death.
WhenAddi ng Fuel
Fillfuel tank outdoors or in well-ventilated area.
Checkfuel lines, tank, cap, and fittings frequently for cracks or leaks.
Replaceif necessary.
Forinformation on refueling natural or LPgas engines, read the operating instructions
suppliedby the equipment manufacturer.

How To Start The Engine - Figure 3

Rapidretraction of startercord (kickback) will pull hand and arm
towardengine faster thanyou can let go.
Brokenbones, fractures, bruises or sprains could result.
WARNING
Whenstarting engine, pullthe starter cords lowly until resistance is felt and then
pullrapidly t o avoid kickback.
Removeall external equipment /engine loads before starting engine.
Direct-coupled equipment components such as, but not limitedto, blades,
impellers, pulleys, sprockets, etc.,must be securely attached.
WARNING
Fuel andits vapors are extremely flammable and explosive.
Fireor explosioncan cause severe burns or death.
WhenStar ting Engine
Ensurethat spark plug, muffler, and air cleaner (if equipped) are in place and
secured.
Donot crank engine with spark plug removed.
