Inspect Muffler And Spark Arrester - Figure 5Running engines produce heat. Engine parts, especially muffler,
becomeextremely hot.
Severethermal burns canoccur oncontact.
Combustibledebris, such as leaves, grass, brush, etc. cancatch fire.
WARNING
Allowmuffler, engine cylinder and fins to cool before touching.
Removeaccumulated debris frommuffler area and cylinder area.
It is a violation of California Public Resource Code, Section 4442, to use or
operatethe engine on any forest-covered, brush-covered,or grass-covered land
unless the exhaust system is equipped with a spark arrester,as defined in
Section4442, maintainedin effective working order. Other states or federal
jurisdictions may haves imilarlaws. Contact t heoriginal equipment
manufacturer, retailer, or dealer to obtain a spark arrester designed for the
exhaust systeminstalled on this engine.
Removeaccumulated debris frommuffler area and cylinder area. Inspect the muffler (A,
Figure5) for cracks, corrosion, orother damage. Remove the spark arrester (B), if
equipped, and inspect for damage or carbon blockage. If damage is found, install
replacement parts beforeoperating.
WARNING: Replacementparts must be of the same design and installed
inthe same position as the original parts. Other parts may not perform as well, may
damagethe unit, andmay result in injury.
How ToChange The Oil - Figure 8 9 10 11Usedoil is ahazardous wasteproduct andmu st be disposed of properly.Do not discard
withhousehold waste. Check with your local authorities, service center, or dealer for safe
disposal/recycling facilities.
Remove Oil1. Withengine off but still warm, disconnect the spark plug wire (A) and keep it away
fromthe spark plug(Figure 8).
2. Removethe oil drain plug (B, Figure 9). Drain the oil into an approved container.
3. Afterthe oil has drained, install and tighten the oil drain plug.
Change The Oil Filter (if equipped)Somemodels areequipped with oil f ilter. For replacement intervals, see the
Maintenance chart.
1. Drainthe oil from the engine. See Remove Oil section.
2. Removethe oil filter (C) and dispose of properly. See Figure 10.
3. Beforeyou install the new oil filter, lightly lubricate the oil filter gasket with fresh,
cleanoil.
4. Installthe oil filter by hand until the gasket contacts the oil filter adapter, then tighten
theoilfilter1/2to3/4turns.
5. Addoil. See Add Oil section.
6. Startand run the engine. As the engine warms up, check for oil leaks.
7. Stopthe engine and check the oil level. It should be at the top of the full indicator (F)
onthe dipstick.
Add OilPlaceengine level.
Cleanthe oil fill area of any debris.
Seet he Specifications section for oil capacity.
1. Removethe dipstick (D) and wipe with a clean cloth (Figure 11).
2. Pourthe oil slowly into the engine oil fill (E). Do not overfill. After adding oil, wait
oneminute and then check theoil level.
3. Installand tighten the dipstick.
4. Removethe dipstick and check the oil level. It should be at the top of the full indicator
(F)on the dipstick.
5. Installand tighten the dipstick.
How To Service The Air Filter - Figure 6WARNING
Fuel andits vapors are extremely flammable and explosive.
Fireor explosioncan cause severe burns or death.
Nevers tart or run the engine with the air cleaner assembly (if equipped) or the
airf ilter (if equipped) removed.
NOTICE: Do not use pressurized air or solvents to clean the filter.Pressurized air can
damagethe filter andsolvents will dissolvethe filter.
Seet he Maintenance Chart for service requirements.
1. Openthe latches (A) and remove the cover (B).SeeFigure6.
2. Removethe nut (D) and the retainer (E)..
3. Removethe air filter (F).
4. Removethe pre-cleaner (G), if equipped, from the air filter.
5. Toloosen debris, gently tap the air filter on a hard surface. If the air filter is
excessively dirty, replace with a new air filter.
6. Washthe pre-cleaner in liquid detergent and water. Then allow it to thoroughly air
dry.Do not oil the pre-cleaner.
7. Assemblethe dry pre-cleaner to the air filter.
8. Installthe air filter and secure with retainer and nut.
9. Installand secure the cover.
How ToClean The Air Cooling System - Figure 7Running engines produce heat. Engine parts, especially muffler,
becomeextremely hot.
Severethermal burns can occur on contact.
Combustibledebris, such as leaves, grass, brush, etc. cancatch fire.
WARNING
Allowmuffler, engine cylinder and fins to cool before touching.
Removeaccumulated debris frommuffler area and cylinder area.
NOTICE: Do not use water to clean the engine. Watercould contaminate the fuel
system.Use a brush or dry cloth to clean the engine.
This is anair cooled engine. Dirt or debris can restrict air flow and cause the engine to
overheat, resulting in poor performance and reduced engine life.
Usea brush or dry clothto remove debris fromthe finger guard (A). Keep linkage,
springs andcontrols ( B)clean. Keepthe area around and behind the muffler (C)freeof
any combustible debris (Figure 7). Make sure that the oil cooler fins (D) are free of dirt
anddebris.
StorageWARNING
Fuel andits vapors are extremely flammable and explosive.
Fireor explosioncan cause severe burns or death.
WhenStor ing Fuel Or Equipment With Fuel In Tank
Storeaway from furnaces, stoves, water heaters or other appliances that have
pilot lights or other ignition sources because they can ignite fuel vapors.
Engine Oil
Whilethe engine is stillwarm, change the engine oil.
