IMAGE QUALITY

This camera has five image quality settings: raw, super fine, extra fine, fine, and standard. Always select the desired setting before taking the picture. See navigating the recording-mode menu on page 80.

Image quality controls the rate of compression, but has no effect on the number of pixels in the image. The higher the image quality, the lower the rate of compression and the larger the file sizes. The super-fine mode will produce the highest quality image and the largest image files. If the eco- nomical use of the memory card is important, use the standard mode; standard image quality is suffi- cient for normal usage.

File formats vary with the image quality setting. Super fine images are saved as a TIFF file. The extra fine, fine, and standard settings are formatted as a JPEG file. Super fine, extra fine, fine, and stan- dard files are saved as 24-bit color or 8-bit monochrome images. RAW creates a high-quality file for- mat that can only be read with the DiMAGE Viewer software.

If the image quality is changed, the data panel will display the approximate number of images that can be recorded at that setting on the installed memory card. One memory card can contain images with differing qualities.
