Whileitisimportanttoprotectles,data,andsettingsthatareontheharddiskdriveoronthesolidstate
drive,youmightalsoneedtoinstallanewoperatingsystem,installnewdevicedrivers,updateyoursystem
UEFI,orrecoverpreinstalledsoftware.Thisinformationwillhelpyouhandleyourcomputerwithproper
careandkeepitintopworkingshape.

Installinganewoperatingsystem

Ifyouinstallanewoperatingsysteminyourcomputer,youneedtoinstalltheSupplementlesandThinkPad
devicedriversforitatthesametime.Thenecessarylesarelocatedinthefollowingdirectoriesofyoursolid
statedriveorharddiskdrive:
•TheSupplementlesfortheoperatingsystemsupport edareintheC:\SWTOOLS\OSFIXESdirectory .
•ThedevicedriversfortheoperatingsystemsupportedareintheC:\SWTOOLS\DRIVERSdirectory.
•ThepreloadedsoftwareapplicationsareintheC:\SWTOOLS\APPSdirectory.
Notes:
•Theprocessofinstallingthenewoperatingsyst emdeletesallthedataonyourharddiskdrive,including
backupsorimagesthatwerestoredinahiddenfolderbyuseoftheRescueandRecoveryprogram.
•IfyoucannotndtheSupplementles,thedevicedrivers,andapplicationsoftwareyouneedonyour
harddiskdrive,orifyouwanttor eceiveupdatesandthelatestinformationaboutthem,refertothe
ThinkPadWebsiteathttp://www.lenovo.com/ThinkPadDrivers.

Beforeyoubegin

Beforeyouinstalltheoperatingsystem,dothefollowing:
•CopyallthesubdirectoriesandlesintheC:\SWTOOLSdirectorytoaremovablestoragedevice,toavoid
losinglesduringtheinstallation.
•Printthesectionsyouwillbeusing.Gotothesectionfortheoperatingsystemyouareusing:
–“InstallingtheWindows7operatingsystem”onpage100
–“InstallingWindowsVista”onpage101
–“InstallingWindowsXP”onpage102
Notes:IfyourcomputerisaWindows7model,
–32-bitversionsofWindowsdonotsupportThinkPadSetupfeatures.Only64-bitversionsofWindows
cantakeadvantageofthefeaturesenabledby64-bitUEFIBIOS.
–IfyouwanttostartWindowsRecoveryEnvironment(WinRE)using64-bitversionofMicrosoftWindows
InstallationDVD,youshouldnotchangetheinitialUEFI/LegacyBootsettinginThinkPadSetup.The
UEFI/LegacyBootsettingmustbethesameasitwaswhentheWindowsoperatingsystemimage
wasinstalled.Or,youwillseeanerror.
