You can change how the camera selects the area of the frame to focus on by changing the AF area mode setting (A68).

The default setting is Target finding AF.

If the camera detects the main subject, it focuses on that subject.

If no main subject is detected, the camera automatically selects one or more of the nine

focus areas containing the subject closest to the camera. See “Using Target Finding AF” (A75) for more information.
