Using the extra optical zoom (EZ) When the optical zoom (P36) is used, subjects can usually be magnified up to

3 times. However, if you select a picture

size such as [ ] (3M EZ) which activates the extra optical zoom, the zoom ratio will

be extended as shown below.

Extra optical zoom mechanism

When you set the picture size to [ ] (3M EZ) (3 million pixels), the 6M

(6 million pixels) CCD area is cropped to the centre 3M (3 million pixels) area, allowing a picture with a higher zoom effect.

You can further enhance the zoom magnification with the extra optical zoom without worrying about further picture distortion.

If you set a picture size that activates the extra optical zoom, the extra optical zoom icon [ ] is displayed on the LCD monitor when you use the zoom function.

When the extra optical zoom is used, the zoom will stop moving for an instant near [W] (1k). This is not a malfunction.

When you set [D.ZOOM] in the [REC] mode menu to [ON], the digital zoom can be used and subjects can be recorded at an even higher magnification. (P74)

In motion picture mode [ ], the extra optical zoom does not work.
