Philips Pixel Defect Policy
Philips' Flat Panel Monitors Pixel Defect Policy
ʳ
ʳʳ
ʳ
Philips strives to deliver the highest q uality products. We use some of the
industry's most advanced manuf acturing processes and prac tice
stringentqualityc ontrol. However, pixel or sub pixel defectson the TFT
LCDp anels used in flat p anel monitors are s ometimes unavoidab le. No
manufacturer can guarant ee that all panels will b e free from pixel defects,
butP hilips guarantees that an y monitor with an unacceptabl en umber of
defectswill be repaired orreplaced under warranty. This noticeexplains
thed ifferent types of pixel defects and defines accept abled efect levels
for each type. In order to qualif yf orr epair or replacement und er warranty,
thenumber of pixel defects on a TFT LCD panelmust exceed these
acceptable levels. For e xample, no more than 0.0004% of the sub pix els
ona 19" XGA monitor may be defective. F urthermore, Philips sets even
higher quality standards f or certain types or com binations of pixel def ects
that are more noticeable th an others. This p olicy is valid worldwid e.
ʳ
Pixelsand Sub pixels
ʳ
ʳʳ
ʳ
Apixel , or picture element, isc omposed of three sub pi xels in the primary
colors of red, green and blu e. Many pixels tog ether form an image. W hen
alls ub pixels of a pixel are lit, the three color ed sub pixels togeth er
appear as a single whit e pixel. When all ared ark, the three color ed sub
pixels together appear as a single black pi xel. Other combinations of lit
andd ark sub pixels app ear as single pixels of other colors.
ʳʳ
Types of Pixel Defects
ʳ
ʳʳ
ʳ
Pixeland sub pixel defectsappear on the screen indifferent ways. There
aret wo categories of p ixel defects and s everal types of sub p ixel defects
withineachcategory.
ʳ
Bright Dot Defects Bright dot defects ap pear as pixels or sub pixels that
arealways lit or 'on'. Thatis, abright dot is a sub-p ixel thats tands out on
thes creen when the monit or displays a dark p attern. There are th e types
of bright dot d efects:
ʳ
One lit red, green or
blues ub pixel
Twoadjacent lit sub
pixels:
-R ed + Blue = Purple
-R ed+ Gr een = Yellow
-Gr een + Blue = Cyan
(Light Blue)
Threeadjacent lit sub
pixels(one white pixel)
Ar ed or blue bright dot must be more than 50 percent brighter
than neighboring dots while a green bright dot is 30 percent
brighter than neighboring dots .
Black Dot Def ects Black dot d efects appe ar as pixels or sub pi xels that
areal ways dark or 'off'. That is, a dark dot is a sub-pixel that stands out
onth e screen when the monitor displays a light p attern. These are th e
typesof black dot defects:
One dark sub pixel Two ort hree adjacent dark sub pixels
Proximityof PixelDefects
ʳ
ʳʳ
ʳ
Because pixel and sub pixels def ects of the same type that are near to
one another may be more notic eable, Philips als os pecifies toleranc es for
the proxim ity of pi xel def ects.
ʳ
ʳʳ
PixelDefect Tolerances
ʳ
ʳʳ
ʳ
Inor der to qualify for repair or r eplacement due to pixel d efects during the
warranty period, a TFT LC D panel in a Phili ps flat panel monit or must
have pixel or sub pixel defects exceeding th e tolerances listed i n the
followingtables.
