USING THE PICTURE-FORMAT CONTROL

The TV’s picture-format options allow flexibility in displaying video sources. The choices for

the high-definition (HD) inputs (AV4) are 4:3 and Compress 16:9. The options for TV, AV1, CVI, AV2, and AV3 (side-panel inputs) are 4:3, AUTO, and EXPAND 4:3. See the descriptions of the options to the right and illustrations of them below.

Selecting a Picture Format Using the Remote Control

While watching a video source—with no onscreen menu or display present—press the CURSOR RING RIGHT or LEFT until you select the pic- ture format you want. Or press the FORMAT button to perform the same function.

Picture-format Options

NOTE: Your TV’s screen has what is referred to as a 4:3 aspect ratio, which is conventional, standard size.

Use the 4:3 picture-format option to view standard-size, full-screen video sources. The 4:3 format is the one most commonly used by broadcast stations.

AUTO zooms the picture. Detects the pres- ence of black borders in widescreen-format movies and fills the screen as much as possi- ble, reducing the size of—or eliminating— the black borders. When you select AUTO while watching widescreen-format movies on commercial television, AUTO expands the picture, automatically readjusts the pic- ture for correct viewing when commercials appear, and then returns the picture to

expanded mode when the movie reappears. AUTO provides a more expansive zoom than EXPAND 4:3.

EXPAND 4:3 zooms the picture. Use to expand a widescreen-format movie picture broadcast on commercial TV, reducing the size of—or eliminating—black borders.

COMPRESS 16:9 squeezes the picture, forming black borders. Allows you to show high-definition video signal sources of the highest resolution (called 1080i) in their original widescreen (16:9) format, thus pro- viding a more natural-looking picture. This option is available with the AV4 source only.

WARNING

To prevent uneven picture-tube aging, do not leave nonmoving images or black borders on the screen for an extended period. See page 57.
