MAINTENANCE

WARNING:

When servicing, use only identical replacement parts. Use of any other parts may create a hazard or cause product damage.

WARNING:

Always wear eye protection with side shields marked to comply with ANSI Z87.1, along with hearing protection. Failure to do so could result in objects being thrown into your eyes and other possible serious injuries.

WARNING:

Before inspecting, cleaning or servicing the machine, shut off engine, wait for all moving parts to stop, and disconnect spark plug wire and move it away from spark plug. Failure to follow these instructions can result in serious personal injury or property damage.

GENERAL MAINTENANCE

Before each use, inspect the entire product for damaged, missing, or loose parts such as screws, nuts, bolts, caps, etc. Tighten securely all fasteners and caps and do not operate this product until all missing or damaged parts are replaced. Please call 1-800-860-4050 or contact an authorized service center for assistance.

Avoid using solvents when cleaning plastic parts. Most plastics are susceptible to damage from various types of commercial solvents and may be damaged by their use. Use clean cloths to remove dirt, dust, lubricant, grease, etc.

WARNING:

Do not at any time let brake fluids, gasoline, petroleum- based products, penetrating lubricants, etc., come in con- tact with plastic parts. Chemicals can damage, weaken or destroy plastic which may result in serious personal injury.

Only the parts shown on the parts list are intended to be repaired or replaced by the customer. All other parts should be replaced at an Authorized Service Center.

CLEANING THE AIR FILTER

See Figure 18.

Clean the air filter as indicated by the maintenance ­schedule.

To clean the air filter:

nDepress the latch located below the air filter cover. Then, lift the cover away from the locking tabs and remove it from the unit.

nRemove the air filter.

Rinse filter with clean water.

Gently squeeze filter until excess water is removed.

Apply a light coat of engine lubricant to the filter, then squeeze it out.

nReinstall the air filter.

NOTE:  Make sure the filter is seated properly inside the cover. Installing the filter incorrectly will allow dirt to enter the engine, causing rapid engine wear.

nReinstall the air filter cover making sure that the locking tabs on the unit and the holes in the air filter cover are aligned.

nTo secure, press against the air filter cover until the latch below the cover snaps in place.

NOTE:  For best performance, the air filter should be replaced once each year.

FUEL CAP

WARNING:

Check for fuel leaks. A leaking fuel cap is a fire hazard and must be replaced with an original manufacturer’s replacement cap immediately. If you find any leaks, correct the problem before using the product. Failure to do so could result in a fire that could cause serous personal injury.

The fuel cap contains a non-serviceable filter and a check valve. A clogged fuel filter will cause poor engine performance. If performance improves when the fuel cap is loosened, check valve may be faulty or filter clogged. Replace fuel cap if required.

REPLACING THE SPARK PLUG

See Figure 19.

This engine uses a Champion RY4C spark plug with .025 in. elec- trode gap. Use an exact replacement and replace ­annually.

nRemove the screw on top of the engine housing. This will allow the engine housing to uncover as shown in figure 18.

nRemove the spark plug wire.

nLoosen the spark plug by turning it counterclockwise with a socket.

nRemove the spark plug.

nHand thread the new spark plug, turning it clockwise.

nTighten with a socket and torque to 170 in. lb. minimum, 190 in. lb. maximum. Do not overtighten.

nSecure the engine housing back into place and return the screw. Ensure that the housing is stable.

CAUTION:

Be careful not to cross thread the spark plug. Cross thread- ing will seriously damage the product.

REPLACING THE SPARK ARRESTOR

The spark arrestor must be cleaned or replaced every 50 hours or yearly to ensure proper performance of your product. Spark arrestors may be in different locations depending on the model purchased. Please contact your nearest service dealer for the location of the spark arrestor for your model.
