BASIC PRIN CIPLES O F PA MI XIN G
There was a time w hen the P.A. system and the oper ator
existed only to increase the overall volume of the performers,
so that they could be heard in a large room or above high
ambien t noise levels. Th is ju st isn ’t true any m ore. The sou n d
system and the sou n d en gineer h ave b ecome an integra l par t
of the performance, and the artists are heavily dependent on
the operator’s skill and the quality of the equipment.
The following introduction to the basics of mixing are
included for the benefit of those users who may not have an y
significant familiarity with sound equipmen t, and who are
baffled by the end less jargon used by engineers an d artists
alike.
The four Output Gr oups p rovide subm ixing to the Mix L/ R
outputs or m ay feed external equipment d irectly. Each
incorporates stereo panning and PFL monitoring or bargraph
metering and includes an external Return inpu t for effects or
submixing from external sources.
The Master section provid es ma ster level control for the Left,
Right, Mono and Auxiliary Send busses, with separate AFL
monitoring on each Auxiliary Send and the Mono output.
The Mix L/R and Group outputs all have insert p oints for the
connection of external signal processing.
Comp r eh en siv e Ta lkb ack facilit ies a re p ro vid ed, which al low
an external talkback microphone to be routed to Mix L/ R,
Grou ps and A uxes 1 & 2 as re quired. Six 12-s e gment, 3-col o ur
peak reading LED bargraph meters provide clear display of
Mix L/ R, Group a nd PFL signals. Pressing any PFL or AFL
switch puts the selected signal onto both sides of the
headphones ou tput, and the right bargraph m eter.
