Proportional printing

When the printer is in the LQ mode, it is able to print text with proportional spacing (yielding approximately 80 characters per inch). This means that each character gets precisely the amount of space it needs. For example, the letter “m” is given twice the amount of space used for the “i”, since it’s twice as wide.

Proportional spacing is used in newspapers, magazines and many books because it gives a polished appearance to the finished page.
