Overview

VBrick's SCSI-attached ES3 and ES4 external storage arrays are available to Dell 1850/2850 VOD-W customers to increase video storage or to backup existing content. The VOD 125W and 300W servers use RAID5 technology for speed, performance, and to protect against the failure of a single drive. Data is written across three or more drives to protect drive the content. If the VOD-W server you purchased from VBrick included external storage, the storage array was installed and configured before delivery to your site. Use the steps in this chapter only if you are adding external storage at a later date.

Monitoring Performance

To verify that the external file system is working properly, launch the QVOD Server Console (see Monitoring the Server on page 27), and open the Disk Manager. Click on any drive to view detailed performance characteristics. You can also check the status LEDs on the each the drive. They should all be illuminated steady green. If not, refer to the appropriate Dell documentation. (The Dell PowerVault documentation is online and the manuals are in Related Publications on page viii.) If any of the LEDs show a failure, contact VBrick Support Services. They will explain the warranty process and arrange for a replacement. All drives are hot swappable but it will take several hours or more to rebuild an array and you may want to rebuild at night or during off-peak hours.

Note There is no way to specify where content is saved. If you add additional storage, newly ingested content may be saved on any available drive (internal or external) as determined by the VOD-W software.
