For example, below is showing the Magma Chassis on Bus 7, Device 0, Function 0. Some information has been deleted, but notice the Link Supported Speed is 2.5 Gb/s, Width x8 . This is helpful to know that the chassis is configured for x8 PCI Express Speeds highlighted in red.

IMPORTANT ORDER OF PCI EXPRESS SLOTS

The PHYSICAL PCI Express Slots 1 – 7 are not in order when displayed in any Operating Systems Device information.

Mapping Physical Slot locationsto port locations using lspci

How do you locate your PCI Express Devices in our Magma Chassis? And how does that correspond to physical slot locations?

Below is an example of 7 PCI Express Downstream Ports in our Magma Chassis. This output comes from lspci –vvv > info.txt. It has been cleaned up for this example. The Magma Chassis is located below under Bus 07. There are 7 downstream ports on Bus 8, each port has a number starting with 2, 4, … up to 14. Each port is associated with a physical slot number, 1 through 7. Ultimately, there is a SCSI card below located on port 8, port 8, corresponding to physical slot 2. Unfortunately, the SCSI card results from lspci do not spell out SLOT 2, just port 8 and that is why it is important to understand that a downstream port number is not the same as a physical slot number. The Ethernet card is on port 14, corresponding to physical slot 7.
