Connecting Network Cables
Network cable must c o mply with the followi ng requirements:
•Category 3 or 5 Unshielded Twisted Pair (UTP) for ports runnin g
10Base-T
•Category 5 UTP for ports running 100Base-TX
•Maximum length for UTP connections: 100m (328 ft.)
RJ-45 Connector
The 10Base-T/100Base-TX ports use RJ-45 connectors. Figure 2-5
shows an RJ-45 connector being inserted into a port.

10Base-T/100Base-TX Ports
The 10Base-T/100Base-TX ports use RJ-45 con nectors for conne ction to
10Base-T or 100Base-TX network segments or end- stations. These UTP
connections meet the requirement s of I SO 8877, specified by 10Base-T,
Section 14 of the IEEE 802.3 specificatio n. The ports are wired wi th the
MDI-X function implemented. Workstati on s or ser v er s can be connected
to the ELS100-24TX switch using s tandar d straight- through wired cab les.
For connections to hubs or other switches, a crossover cable may be
necessary (refer to the “MDI/MDI-X Crossover Cable Wiring” section in
Appendix A). See Table A-2 for 10Base-T/100Base-TX connector pin
assignments.
