4. Releasepressurefromtheparkingbrakelever.
Aftercompletingstep3,the brakepedalshould remaininthe down
position.Ifit doesn't,the parkingbrakeis not engaged.Repeatsteps
1-4toengagethe parkingbrake.
Todisengagetheparkingbrake,lightlypressthe brakepedal.
Neverleavea runningmachineunattended.AlwaysdisengagePTO,
setparkingbrake,stopengineand removekeyto preventunintended
starting.
ENGAGING THE PTO
EngagingthePTOtransferspowertothe cuttingdeckor other
(separatelyavailable)attachments.ToengagethePTO:
1. Movethethrottlecontrollever tothe FAST(rabbit)position.
2. Pullthe PTO/BladeEngageknoboutwardintotheengaged(ON)
position.
NOTE:Alwaysoperatethetractorwiththe throttleleverin the FAST
(rabbit)positionforthe mostefficientuse ofthe cuttingdeck orother
(separatelyavailable)PTOdrivenattachments.
MOWING
Tohelpavoidbladecontactor a thrownobjectinjury,keep bystand-
ers,helpers,childrenandpets atleast 75feet fromthe machine
whileitis inoperation.Stopmachineifanyone entersthearea.
Thistractorisequippedwith oneof Craftsman'shighqualitycutting
decks.Thefollowinginformationwillbehelpfulwhen usingthe cutting
deckwithyour tractor.
Donotmowat high groundspeed,especiallyifa mulch kit or
grasscollectorisinstalled.
Forbestresultsitis recommendedthat the firsttwo laps becut
withthe dischargethrowntowardsthecenter.Afterthefirst two
laps,reversethedirectionto throwthe dischargetothe outside
forthe balanceof cutting.Thiswill give a betterappearancetothe
lawn.
Donotcut thegrass too short.Shortgrass invitesweedgrowth
andyellowsquicklyindry weather.
Mowingshouldalways bedone withthe engineat full throttle.
Underheavierconditionsit may be necessarytogo back overthe
cutareaa secondtime to geta cleancut.
Donotattempttomow heavybrushand weedsand extremelytall
grass.Yourtractorisdesignedto mowlawns, notclear brush.
• Keepthebladessharp andreplacethe bladeswhenworn.Refer
tothe "Service& Maintenance"sectionofthis manualforproper
bladesharpeninginstructions.
IMPORTANT:Whenstoppingthe tractorfor anyreason whileon a
grasssurface,always:
1. Engagethe parkingbrake.
2. Shutengineoff and removethekey.
Doingsowill minimizethepossibilityof havingyourlawn "browned"by
hotexhaustfromyourtractor'srunningengine.
MOVING THE TRACTOR MANUALLY
Iffor any reasonthetractorwill not driveor you wish to movethe
tractor,engagethetwo transmissionreleaseleverstomanuallymove
thetractorshort distances.
IMPORTANT:Nevertowor drag thetractorwith therear wheelsonthe
ground.Evenwiththe releaseleversengaged.Doingsowill damage
thetransmissions.
Toengagea releaselever:
1. Pulltheleverrearwardso thatthe elbowpassesthroughthe
larger/roundedpart of thekeyholeslot.
2. Withthe elbowof theleveroutside (rearward)ofthehitch plate,
pushtheleverinwardin the smallpartof the keyholeslotso that
lever'selbowislockedagainstthe back of the hitchplate.
3. Repeattoengagetheother releaselevertoallow thetractor tobe
manuallymoved.SeeFigure6.

4. Tomovethe tractormanually,thebrakemust bedisengagedby
releasingtheparkingbrakeanddepressingtheforwardor reverse
drivepedal.Continueto holdthe drive pedalwhilepushing.
5. Todisengage,movetheleverto alignits elbowwith thelarger/
roundedpartofthe keyholeslotand releasethe leverback
throughthehitchplate.
NOTE:ThetransmissionwillNOTengagewhenthe releaseleveris
pulledout.Returnthe levertoits normalpositionpriorto operatingthe
tractor.
HEADLIGHTS
Thetractorheadlightsareturnedon whenevertheignitionswitchis
turnedtoeither ofthe run positions.
