Downloading a New Firmware Image

YoucanupgradetheoperationalfirmwareintheMatrixSeriesdevicewithoutphysicallyopening
thedeviceorbeinginthesamelocation.Therearethreewaystodownloadfirmwaretothedevice:
•ViaFTPdownload.Thisprocedureuses��anFTPserverconnectedtothenetworkand
downloadsthefirmwareusingtheFTPprotocol.Itisthemostrobustdownloading
mechanism.FordetailsonhowtoperformanFTPdownloadusingthecopycommand,refer
tocopyonpage 286.
•ViaTFTPdownload.ThisprocedureusesaTFTPserverconnectedtothenetworkand
downloadsthefirmwareusingtheTFTPprotocol.FordetailsonhowtoperformaTFTP
downloadusingthecopycommand,refertocopyonpage 286.
•Viatheserial(console)port.Thisprocedureisanoutofbandoperationthatcopiesthe
firmwarethroughtheserialporttothedevice.Ittakesapproximatelyfiveminutesand
requiresminimalconfiguration.Itshouldbeusedincaseswhenyoucannotconnectthe
devicetoperformtheinbandcopydownloadprocedureviaFTPorTFTP.Serialconsole
downloadhasbeensuccessfullytestedwiththefollowingapplications:

Downloading from an FTP or TFTP Server

2. Downloadanewimagefileusingthecopycommandasdetailedincopyonpage 286.

Downloading via the Serial Port

Todownloaddevicefirmwareviatheserial(console)port,proceedasfollows:

Important Notice
The Matrix Series device allows you to download and store multiple image files. This feature is useful for
reverting back to a previous version in the event that a firmware upgrade fails to boot successfully. After
downloading firmware as described above, you can select which image file you want the device to load at
startup using the setboot command in the System Image Loader menu (“Downloading via the Serial Port” on
page 2-72) or the set boot system command (“set boot system” on page 2-75).
