802.1Q VLAN Configuration

ThischapterdescribestheEnterasysMatrixsystem’scapabilitiestoimplement802.1Qvirtual
LANs(VLANs).Itdocumentshowto:
•Create,enable,disableandnameaVLAN.
•ReviewstatusandotherinformationrelatedtoVLANs.
• AssignportstoaVLANandfilterunwantedframesononeormoreports
• AssignaVLANtoaMIBIIinterfaceinordertoviewstatisticsfortheVLAN
•UseGVRP(GARPVLANRegistrationProtocol)tocontrolandpropagateVLANknowledge
throughthenetwork.
• CreateasecureVLANfordevicemanagementsecurity.

VLAN Configuration Summary

VirtualLANsallowthenetworkadministratortopartitionnetworktrafficintologicalgroupsand
controltheflowofthattrafficthroughthenetwork.Oncethetrafficand,ineffect,theusers
creatingthetraffic,areassignedtoaVLAN,thenbroadcastandmulticasttrafficiscontained
withintheVLANanduserscanbeallowedordeniedaccesstoanyofthenetwork’sresources.
Also,someoralloftheportsonthedevicecanbeconfiguredasGVRPports,whichenableframes
receivedwithaparticularVLANIDandprotocoltobetransmittedonalimitednumberofports.
ThiskeepsthetrafficassociatedwithaparticularVLANandprotocolisolatedfromtheotherparts
ofthenetwork.
Note: The device can support up to 4094 802.1Q VLANs. The allowable range for VLANs is 2 to
4094. As a default, all ports on the device are assigned to VLAN ID 1, untagged.
