ownforwardingenginethatusesthisinformationtomakeforwardingdecisionslocallyonthe
modulethatreceivestheframe.Theseenginesindependentlymakeforwardingdecisionsbased
onrouteandruleinformationdistributedbytherouterprotocolprocess.Inastablenetwork,the
distributedrouteandruleinformationisfairlyconstant.Iftherouterprotocolprocesswasto
suddenlyfail,forwardinginformationcurrentatthetimeofthefailureinallprobabilityisusable
fortheshorttimeafterthefailureuntilrecoveryoccurs.Duringthisrecoveryperiod,existing
connections(thatwerenotdirectlyusingthefailedmodule)remainineffect.Newconnections
continuetobeinstalledusingthelastknownʺgoodʺforwardinginformation.Therouterprotocol
processthatfailedisdynamicallyrestartedonanothermodule.Theuserdoesnotconfigurewhere
therouterprocessisrunning.Therouterforwardingprocessremainsactiveoneverymodule.The
protocolprocessexchangesprotocolandmaintainsstatethatitdistributestotheothermodules
anddoesnothavetorunonanyspecificmodule.Oneexceptiontothisruleisthatthemodule
musthave256Mofmemorytoberouterprotocolprocesseligible.
Uponfailureofamodulerunningtherouterprotocolprocess,theprotocolprocessisstartedona
recoverymodule.OneofthefirstmessagesitsendstoitsOSPFneighborsisagraceLSA.High
availabilityfailoverwillsuccessfullyoccurifthefollowingistrue:
•Therouterisenabledforgracefulrestart
•Theneighborsareenabledtoparticipateasgracefulrestarthelper
•TheOSPFdeadintervalisconfiguredforasufficientperiodsuchthatthegraceLSAis
receivedbyitsneighborsbeforetheconfiguredOSPFdeadintervalexpires
•AndeachneighborisamemberofaLAGcommontothefailedrouter,allowingtheneighbor
toremainup
