Change the engine oil (see page ).
Remove the spark plugs (see page ).
Turn the engine for a few seconds by turning the engine switch
to the START position to distribute the oil in the cylinde rs.
If your engine will be stored with gasoline in the fuel tank and
carburetor, it is important to reduce the hazard of gasoline vapor
ignition. Select a well-ventilated storage area a way from any
appliance that operates with a flame, such as a furnace, wa ter
heater,or clothes dryer. Also avoid any area with a spark-
producing electric motor, or where power tools are operated.
If possible, avoid storage areas with high humidity, beca use that
promotes rust and corrosion.
Keep theengine level in storage. Tilting can cause fuel or oil
leakage.
Unless all fuelhas been drained from the fuel tank, leave the fuel
valve in theCLOSED or OFF position to reduce the possibility of
fuel leakage.
With the engine and exhaust system cool, cover the engine to
keep out dust. A hot engine and exhaust system can igni te or melt
some materials. Do not use sheet plastic as a dust cover.
A nonporous cover will trap moisture around the engine,
promoting rust and corrosion.
If installed, remove the battery and store it in a cool, dry place.
Recharge the battery once a month while the engine is in storage.
This will help to extend the service life of the battery.
Check your engine as described in the
BEFORE OPERATIONCHECKS
sectionof this manual (see page ).
If the fuel was drained during storage preparation, fill the ta nk with
fresh gasoline. If you keep a container of gasoline for refueling, be
sure it contains only fresh gasoline. Gasoline oxi dizes and
deteriorates over time, causing hard starting.
Gasolineis highly flammable and explosive, and you
can be burned or seriously injured when handli ng
fuel.
If the engine has been running, allow it to cool for at least 15
minutes before loading the engine-powered equipment on the
transport vehicle. A hot engine and exhaust sy stem can burn you
and can ignite some materials.
Keep theengine level when transporting to reduce the possibility
of fuelleakage. If the fuel tank is equipped with a fuel valve, move
thef uelvalve lever to OFF.
Pour a teaspoon 5 10 cm (5 10 cc) of clean engine oi l into
each cylinder.
Reinstall the spark plugs.
If the cylinders were coated with oil during storage preparati on,
the engine may smoke briefly at startup. This is normal.
Loosen the carburetor drain screw, and drain the carburetor i nto
an approved gasoline container. After draining is complete d,
tighten the carburetor drain screw.
Disconnect the fuel line to the engine, and drain the fuel tank
into an approved gasoline container. If the fuel tank is equipped
with a valve, turn the fuel valve to the OPEN or ON position to
enable draining. After draining is completed, reconne ct the fuel
line.
Wipe upspills immediately.
Refuel only outdoors.
Stopengine and keep heat, sparks, and flame away.
