•Someappliances,suchascertainportabledesktopfansorairpuriers,canproducenegativeions.Ifa
computerisclosetosuchanappliance,andisexposedforanextendedtimetoaircontainingnegative
ions,itmightbecomeelectrostaticallycharged.Suchachargemightbedischargedthroughyourhands
whenyoutouchthekeyboardorotherpartsofthecomputer,orthroughconnectorsonI/Odevices
connectedtoit.Eventhoughthiskindofelectrostaticdischarge(ESD)istheoppositeofadischargefrom
yourbodyorclothingtothecomputer,itposesthesameriskofacomputermalfunction.
Yourcomputerisdesignedandmanufacturedtominimizeanyeffectsofelectrostaticcharge.Anelectrostatic
chargeaboveacertainlimit,however,canincreasetheriskofESD.Ther efore,whenusingthecomputer
closetoanappliancethatcanproducenegativeions,givespecialattentiontothefollowing:
•Avoiddirectlye xposingyourcomputertotheairfromanappliancethatcanproducenegativeions.
•Keepyourcomputerandperipheralsasfaraspossiblefromsuchanappliance.
•Whereverpossible,groundyourcomput ertofacilitatesafeelectrostaticdischarge.
Note:Notallsuchappliancescauseasignicantelectrostaticcharge.
Begentlewithyourcomputer
•Avoidplacinganyobjects(includingpaper)betweenthedisplayandthekeyboardorthepalmrest.
•Yourcomputerdisplayisdesignedtobeopenedandusedatanangleslightlygreaterthan90degrees.
Donotopenthedisplaybeyond180degrees,asthismightdamagethecomputerhinge.
•Donotturnyourcomputeroverwhiletheacpoweradapterispluggedin.Thiscouldbreaktheadapter
plug.
Carryyourcomputerproperly
•Beforemovingyourcomputer ,besuretoremoveanymedia,turnoffattacheddevices,anddisconnect
cordsandcables.
•Whenpickingupyouropencomputer ,holditbythebottom.Donotpickuporholdyourcomputerby
thedisplay.
Handlestoragemediaanddrivesproperly
•Ifyourcomputercomeswithanopticaldrive,donottouchthesurfaceofadiscorthelensonthetray.
•WaituntilyouheartheCDorDVDclickintothecenterpivotofthedrivebeforeclosingthetray.
•Wheninstallingtheharddiskdrive,mSATAsolidstatedrive,oropticaldrive,followtheinstructions
shippedwithyourhardware,andapplypressureonlywhereneededonthedevice.
•TurnoffyourcomputerifyouarereplacingtheharddiskdriveorthemSATAsolidstatedrive.
•Whenreplacingtheharddiskdrive,reattachthecoverofthedriveslot.
•Storeyourexternalandremovableharddiskdriveoropticaldrivesintheappropriatecontainersor
packagingwhentheyarenotbeingused.
•Beforeyouinstallanyofthefollowingdevices,touchametaltableoragroundedmetalobject.Thisaction
reducesanystaticelectricityfromyourbody.Thestaticelectricitycoulddamagethedevice.
